Upcoming events – Clinical Practice Guideline Development: strengthening the knowledge translation process

This full-day workshop will engage midwives and other stakeholders in strengthening the process of knowledge translation and clinical practice guideline (CPG) development at the AOM. During the day we will look at how evidence is defined and utilized in midwifery practice, improve and build on critical appraisal skills, and be introduced to the GRADE guideline development methodology. This day is a special opportunity for those involved in the research, writing, and approval of AOM CPGs to gather together to build skills and discuss the guideline development process.

Presenters:

• The Nature of Evidence in Midwifery Vicki Van Wagner, RM, PhD(c)

How research evidence is created, perceived and used among health care providers can vary by philosophies of care, availability of resources and inter-professional relationships. Discussing how Midwives define 'evidence' in their practice is an important part of producing guidelines that can be implemented effectively to improve maternity care among Midwives in Canada.

• Critical Appraisal Skills for Guideline Development Liz Darling, RM, PhD(c)

Midwives involved in CPG development have expressed an interest in further building critical appraisal skills, and methods of how to evaluate evidence and translate knowledge into their own practice in the context of informed choice. Liz Darling, chair of the AOM CPG Subcommittee, will lead a skill-enhancing workshop focusing on evidence appraisal techniques that incorporate contexts unique to Midwifery.

• Introduction to the grading quality of evidence and strength of recommendations (GRADE) guideline methodology Dr. Gordon Guyatt MD, FRCPC

It is has been proposed that the GRADE system should become the guideline development methodology used for future AOM guidelines. The GRADE method offers a transparent approach to grading quality of evidence that integrates client values, preferences, and the limitations of local resources for Midwives working in a wide variety of settings. Dr. Gordon Guyatt will lead an introductory workshop in the use of GRADE for CPG development.
