CAM denounces this regressive and harmful policy as a violation of international development agreements.
Montreal, Canada: The Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) supports and endorses the United Nations Foundation in its opposition to the United States’ Global Gag Rule, which will be detrimental to the rights, health and well-being of women, girls and trans people in countries around the world. CAM denounces this regressive and harmful policy as a violation of international development agreements.
“The re-enactment of this policy will put lives at risk. We know that this will do nothing to reduce abortion rates; instead, increasing barriers to access to safe abortion services will lead to serious complications and maternal deaths,” said CAM President, Katrina Kilroy. “This policy will make it more difficult for millions of women, girls and trans people to access contraception and health care, thus jeopardizing their lives and their futures.”
The Canadian Association of Midwives applauds Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen, for initiating an international strategy to mitigate the impact of the Global Gag Rule. “Funding is vital to agencies working in maternal and child health and reproductive health and we commend the Netherlands and other governments that have moved quickly to support an international fund to continue this important work,” says Katrina Kilroy. “We are heartened to hear that the Canadian government is considering supporting this fund. We strongly recommend that the Canadian government commit to supporting the international abortion fund and make concerted efforts to increase support for safe abortion care as part of a comprehensive package of sexual and reproductive health services.”
The Canadian Association of Midwives is the national organization representing midwives and the profession of midwifery in Canada. CAM supports the National Aboriginal Council of Midwives (NACM) as the voice of Aboriginal midwifery. The mission of CAM is to provide leadership and advocacy for midwifery as an autonomous, self-regulated, publicly funded and vital part of primary maternal and newborn care. CAM promotes the development of the profession in the public interest and contributes the midwifery perspective to the national health policy agenda.
