What’s Going on Down There? Everything you wanted to know about the vagina but were afraid to ask.

Ensuring Women Stay Strong, Stay in Control - Mary Wood,  Physical Therapist

Pelvic dysfunctions involving back pain, pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse and sexual pain often have an onset during pregnancy, birth or the early postpartum period.  These dysfunctions can become persistent impacting a woman’s health and well-being.  This session will reinforce midwifery practices and introduce new strategies to prevent pelvic dysfunctions  and/or limit the impact of dysfunctions should they occur.

Suturing - Beyond the Basics - Dr. Jack Stonehocker

Assessing and suturing unusual perineal, labial and sulcus tears including a hands-on demonstration by Dr. Stonehocker. Participants to bring a needle driver, scissors, suture material and foam (memory foam if possible) to practice suturing techniques.

Save the Pelvic Floor! - Susan Prendergast, Nurse Practitioner

There is much published literature that has examined the prevalence of de novo pregnancy and/or postpartum incontinence however, most of these studies involved retrospective analysis of data and use of active management of labour. After completion of two reviews focused on the relationships between incontinence, pregnancy and childbirth we have concluded that there is much more to the story. The state of the science for this area of research does not support the claim that vaginal birth causes incontinence. However, before proponents of natural childbirth can refute this claim, further work is required that is prospective in nature and is considerate of confounding modifiable (e.g. high pre-pregnancy BMI) and situational variables (e.g. active management of labour).  This session will summarize the key concepts underpinning this area of research and reinforce the importance of midwifery care in relation to maintenance continence.

Tips and Tricks for Pelvic and Vaginal Problems During the Childbearing Year - Barb Bodiguel, Registered Midwife

Barb will start with her solutions and then ask for audience participation. Sharing session:  What tips and tricks have you used as a midwife ?
