Midwifery in Canada - Prince Edward Island

Report submitted September 2007

There is still no legislation under which midwives can practice in PEI. However a change of government with more interest in midwifery is giving us some hope that women in PEI may have more birth options in the not so distant future. In the early summer the PEI membership expanded from two to four. Our plan for the fall and winter is to become more organized as an association, and to continue to work with the BORN Coalition educating the new government and the public about midwifery, and to seek support for birth options for PEI families. BORN have secured funding through the CO-OP Secretariat to undertake a one year feasibility study related to the opening of a birthing centre and women’s health centre in PEI.

We are anxiously waiting for the outcome of the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick government’s announcement to legislate midwifery in their provinces. We hope it will encourage our new government to follow suit.
